Heatwaves - we know the problem, but what do we do about it?
Regen Brisbane starts 2025 with a collaboration exploring the issue of the increasing urban heat, and what we could and should do within the frameworks of Doughnut Economics and the SDGs.
It started with a photo showing the surface temperature of my driveway and a post on Linkedin and Facebook.
The simplicity of the message connected with people from many walks of life. Heatwaves affect so many other concerns, yet the increasing urban heat remains one of the intractable problems we face where there is plenty of talk, years of serious analysis and reports, and occasional, unconnected, partial solutions for mitigation and adaption.
In this blog post, Brisbane’s green future: Climate action strategies aligned with sustainable development goals, Ali Cheshmehzangi talks about the need for “collaborations with local communities, businesses, and academic institutions”, “neighbourhood-based projects” and “collaboration [that] promotes a sustainable culture throughout the city.”
This is spot on, but how do we make it happen at the scale and speed required?
During February,
is working with and ACF Community Brisbane Northside to explore how we all might come together to do these collaborations, at scale and speed, to mitigate or adapt to urban heat. There will be at least one in-person workshop, and others activities online.Date Claimer: Sunday 16th February, 3pm to 5pm. Workshop at Bracken Ridge Library Early Registration here
