On Friday’s Zoom session we discussed our shared purpose (why are we doing this) and why we frame it using appreciative inquiry.
Our shared purpose (open to adjustment and refinement)
What would it be like if the Greater Brisbane area transitioned to a Doughnut economy - staying within the planetary boundaries while meeting the needs of all the people within?
And then what if the whole community came together to implement policies like the Shaping SEQ 2023 Plan, BCC’s Brisbane Vision, TMR’s Action Plan for Walking?
What would that future look like? How might we contribute towards making that happen?
Appreciative Inquiry
We discussed how Appreciate Inquiry was a more productive approach for complex problems than the more common focus on individual problems and jumping at obvious solutions. We used several local examples to illustrate the difference.
Appreciative Inquiry (David Cooperrider) means that we:
Appreciate, recognise, and value the assets we have at our disposal and the good work that is already going on around us.
Inquire, explore, uncover, with curiosity and openness to diverse views and new possibilities.
What Assets do we have at our disposal?
We briefly touched on the assets we had at our disposal with the intention that we all think about this more before we meet again. Asset can include things like skills, time, knowledge, contacts, etc.
Substack - our main platform (free)
Core group of the willing
Assets we are able and willing to contribute
Our networks
Mid group of the supportive
Outer group of the interested
Work already being done eg policies, activities, groups, etc
*** We have now added a section to the substack listing existing policies and plans related to the future of our region. https://regenbrisbane.substack.com/s/policies
Conversations
We move in the direction of our conversations.
We discussed the way our conversations shaped attitudes and actions within our group, within the organisations we are involved in, and within society.
And raised the question:
What could we do to move Greater Brisbane in the desired direction if we combine our assets? (recombinant innovation)
Takeaway tasks:
Consider whether you want to be part of the core group (committed), mid group (actively supportive) or outer group (interested) and what assets you are able and willing to offer. Boundaries are permeable, and people can move in and out as their priorities and circumstances change.
Review our shared purpose
Become familiar with the various platforms above
Build habits of taking part in conversations even if it’s just a supportive like.
Consider setting up your own substack.
